Appeals court favors woman suing Southampton Village Police

Am not entirely familiar with this story - am just skimming the story - except for the fact that it seems excessive to search the woman - unless the drugs evident in the car is enough to constitute probable cause. My point here is to note that a man who strangled and (in some kind of irreversable rage) murdered someone in full view of many witnesses at the Publick House in Southampton this past summer was neither searched for drugs nor tested for the amount of alchohol or potential drugs he may or may not have consumed...that seems out of balance by comparison..." Restaurant owner robbed in Westhampton Beach

So sorry for the proprietor in this incident...hope she recovers from the trauma soon as she can...

It seems that 'gone are the innocent days' of the Hamptons - our own proximity to urban blight, over building and the downturn of the economy is only going to increase incidents like this one...lock your doors people...and get a dog!" Oct 23, 08 12:50 PM

Hampton Synagogue files legal brief on proposed religious boundary

What would be the problem of issuing a map to the people who want to use the area so that they would be aware of their own boundaries and there wouldn't be any reason for the state to pay to make any demarcations?

Or would the demarcations be there to protect the people using the mile square area as pedestrians or to push baby carriages from other people using the same area, who are not observing any particular religion at that moment, and who are driving their cars? What happens in the event of an accident - would there be a lawsuit? Is the driver of a car at fault for not knowing what the demarcation means? Who pays for the additional signage to explain what it means? etc...

It seems a political fiat is unleashed if the state has to be responsible for the demarcation - why shouldn't the religious observers themselves be aware of where the square mile is and use it accordingly and with caution?

My experience of these types of issues from upstate New York in the summer is that the situation becomes intolerably dangerous for everyone who needs to use the area - roads are clogged with pedestrians who seem unaware of others also using the area, or religious drivers who do not seem to care to observe any driving safety rules.

This is especially true at night when it is dark and people are required to wear dark clothing to observe their religion - and then others cannot see them and they have difficulty avoiding them while driving their cars on the roadways...

Just thinking of everyone's safety first..." Oct 24, 08 11:39 AM

Venerable radio host Paul Sidney, 69, dies

God Rest You, Mr. Sidney - You gave many of us peace of mind announcing about missing pets & their descriptions, in a storm or what have you. Knowing that service was available made me feel that somebody cared - You did...and afforded the only available avenue to alert the community. We will miss seeing you in Sag Harbor on a Main Street bench - or will you appear there anyway from time to time? Please do so if you can. With your ready smile and handshake - who knew you were so ill? Praying for your sould to rest.... " Apr 8, 09 7:51 PM

Southampton High School Student Will Not Return To School After Shotgun Arrest, District Says

a parent that allows a 17 year old to drive to school with a shotgun in the car is an irresponsible parent...that is not an assumption it is a fact...tha person is a minor and needs the supervision of a parent who knows what he is up to...whether or not the area is a hunting are or not...in fact out west where hunting is more common they are extremely careful with guns, not carelessly leaving them around and forgetting where the guns are located...if you handle guns properly it is not possible to forget where they are...so it seems like intent is probably involved in this situation...and when kids are shooting at each other then what other kind of anarchy will follow?" Public Asked To Be On Alert Following String Of Car Break-Ins Across Southampton Town

the economy is bottoming out and people are heading for desperate measures..the cars parked at beaches in the summer have long been a target, but thirty to forty breakins in driveways, wow, those thieves are bold...get the automatic lights and get the dogs barking. listen thieves, come into the driveways and get canine teeth in your legs...!" Teenager Stabbed After Party in Bridgehampton

perhaps the girl or boy who was being "hit on" (= receiving unwanted advances) from the stabber and the boy who stepped up to intervene are terrified of revealing the name of this violent person fearing reprisals? who protects them when the headlines are fogotten and they again attend a party - as every teenager eventually will. the parents can't cope with their teenagers...but at least some parents should be around for these parties...or chaperones if some sort..." Town Will Go To Court, If Necessary, To Stop Homeless Shelter At Hampton Bays Motel

The town officials named above who were absent for the special meeting for this imprtant issue know where their bread is buttered. They would prefer to support the project at Lttle Fresh Pond where Jay Jacobs proposes to build a HUGE tennis camp and additional roads to accomodate traffic where there was once a small discreet camp and once that became defunct a community tennis club was there that also petered out. This is a beautiful little natural place that Jay Jacobs wants to turn into a$1500/week per child camp. Jacobs is the New York State Democratic Committee Chairperson. Why would these politicos support people who desperately need help? They can further the goals of the wealthy instead. And gain political kudos. Democrats they are not." Dec 3, 11 11:28 AM

the point is that anna throne holst supports jay jacob's project while she doesn't even show up for the meeting about the homeless project because it is to her political advantage to glad hand the wealthy dems and ignore those socially in need...politics and business as usual...hand in hand...just as in washington, dc" Dec 3, 11 7:41 PM

Discord Erupts Over Shinnecock Vote On Casino Partner's Future

a shinnecock tribal member once told me that the tribal members owning the areas located along old montauk highway where there are commercial ventures, smoke shops, and so on do not assist the members of the nation not as fortunate .... if this is true then what would be different if gambling casinos come to long island? addiction of any kind is a disease and a problem since addictions cause the addicted to think unclearly...so much of human struggle is man's inhumanity to man...tobacco companies addicting people to nicotine and killing them is an example and then trying to attract a youthful audience with cartoon like advertisements since their own customers were dying out. so here comes another addiction. gambling. if your soul was at stake in this decision, would you want to be guilty of the misery that gambling will bring to people? i am not a native amrican, but always valued the way their decision making is portrayed in literature and lore. decisions are made with sevral gnerarions in mind, their benefits or losses. when i read Black Elk Speaks his wisdom was so simple in that he observes human nature very simply.

are the shinncock treating each other in this case as badly as thy were treated by european settlers? it does not help that interlopers from chicago of all places are already trying to buy the votes and loyalty with so called salaries.

the governor of illinois is in prison this very week for over a decade for dishonesty, ron blegoyavich....one of the highest offices one can hold in a state. so what can be expected of these so called business people from chicago seeking new territory to exploit? alreay they want a vote on a contract not even vetted or read by others in the tribe? dishonest already." Shinnecocks Reject Casino Partner Contract

It is revealing to read between the lines of Malik's attorney's statement. My translation of the atty's remarks goes something like this:

"Despite hammering away at the Shinnecock tribe for months negotiating the contract, we will respect their decision to vote no, for now, since we have to; but we have only lost the first round in this battle that we will continue to wage. We see the current disappointment as necessary, because eventhough we tried to slip in some new concepts into the contract, and eventhough we tried paying off a few people, we plan to make a whole bunch of profit back at the expense of the nation in the future, when we force this deal through.".

Does anyone else agree or see any other hidden agenda messages in the attorney's statement? After all, he/ she has to save their own face in light of losing this part of the fight for Malik. Bravo Shinnecocks!" Dec 16, 11 10:37 AM

thank you for clarifying that point. please further clarify where the tribe's economic justice is addressed by gaming and thnks." Dec 16, 11 2:05 PM

Southampton ZBA Rejects Front Yard Pool Plan In Bridgehampton

am appreciating the comment about the hampton bays pools...an inch from the street is right. if this still interests you, check this out. we had a lovely home in shinnecock hills, close enough to see the hamlet of hampton bays sign down the street and also, to pull in the homeless story, not far from another cheap residential hotel, not the same one as the one in the other stoy, but similar.

a nice retired auto executive bought and renovated the house next door, pointed out that his property extended a bit past the entrance to our driveway (that was a sand road when we bought the place and which our other neighbor had paved over up to our driveway). the family oriented auto exec asked for an easement to build a pool on the front side of the house so his grand children did not have to swim on the back sideof the house which had traffic from old montauk highway whizzing by. we gave him the easement, he built the pool, then he flippedthe house for a tidy profit to two of the worst neighbors ever, and here is why.

one day my dad saw a strange man wandering around their driveway, he was white, shoeless, and said he lived at the hotel across the street and was looking for his friends. once advised he was trspassing, he left. we told the new neighbors the next day when they came to winterize the house. they saidthanks, but t much else. we were away for the next two days and upon returning found a fence had been built across our driveway. fter we inquired the neighbors said we were on their property line. they refused to remove the very cheap and ugly fence, we could not even enter they ripped away two huge old rhododendron bushes to put the fence there, and they drained the pool ono the place were the bushes had been, later on the pool draining ended up killing the remaining arbor vitae planted in a row that we thought prettier than a fence.

i could go on but you get the picture.

Shinnecocks Reject Casino Partner Contract

love that about hamlin, brought arthur ashe, wimbledon winner and us open champ to the meadow club and not good enough for those birds. what a laugh, the last bastion of true prejudice in america. how can they stand themselves?

back to the topic, gambling casinos do not belong here. we are already population dense enough. the water table will not sustain much more use. when we have to truck in water and pay dearly, then it will be clearer. and the greedy will not suffer behind that, but everyone else will. well, everone who needs water.

i love the fishing shacks turned into year round houses. my house was a summer home. when we tore out a wall to renovate there was one piece of newspaper from 1922 in the wall as insulation!" Dec 18, 11 11:29 AM

Eyewitnesses Share Experiences Moments Before Wrong-Way Driver Dies In Head-On Crash On Sunrise Highway In Westhampton

to go in the wrong dircetion on 27, don't you have to pass two sets of 'wrong way' signs that are one either side of the ramp and that are red? was this when the fog hit the area?" Jan 1, 12 11:29 AM

this happened to me heading south on the taconic state parkway in upstate new york, an elderly lady heading north in the southbound lane for passing had a smile on her face, it was sunny, and early ... like 9:30 on a sunday morning ...and there were scant seconds between our seeing her, our shocked faces watching her pass, this took twenty to thirty seconds and then they were passed us on our left...there wasn't much time to communicate the error to them..an older couple... looked like they didn't know the area, like sightseers or something like that...not drunk...and it might ave made sense that they were entering a two lane road marked with yellow or some kind of lines in the center of the two lanes, but there were none. never knew what ha ppened to hese people god help them." Nassau Police: Hampton Bays Man Shot And Killed After Robbing Seaford Drugstore; Federal Agent Killed

my neighbor mentioned this story to me this morning with the comment..."this is close to home"... and i agree...also, having had some limited experience in a pharmaceutical setting...people taking oxycodone or oxycontin will go to any lengths, tell any lies, and make up the most unbelievable stories to get these drugs...for street value too if they do not take them all themselves. but those who write prescriptions do not so eaily, and there are controls in place to show pharmacists and doctors how many prescriptions people have and where to alert them to the " drug seeking" patient." Southampton Town Will End Year With Budget Surplus

please take some of that surplus and apply it to returning garbage cans to north sea beach...and the weekly removl of garbage...by now the scofflaws who used the cans for their household garbage have learned their lesson and will stop beibg so " clever " and cheap, or they have gone to their winter residences. those of us using the beaches have been overwhelmed with the amount of garbage we must remove on a daily basis...from people who just throw their garbage on the road or beach now that there is no garbage can." State Police: Wrong-Way Driver Was Intoxicated

It would be interesting to know the precise alcohol equivalent of 0.30 alcohol blood level content...does that mean one- third of your blood level hs alcohol in it? I agree with the first comment, sounds like the wrong way driver had cosumed at least two six packs of beer by himself and then went for a drive. However, it seems like a " death wish " may be part of this equation, since someone from Easthampton HAD to know they were entering 27 the wrong way. There are MORE than enough red lettered Wrong Way signs to prevent this type of event. Either subconsciously or consciously this man wanted to die. Selfish jerk. AM so sorry for those injured people...what a trauma. He did not care wo he took down with him." Jan 18, 12 12:57 PM

East Hampton Town Police Seek Bloomer Bandit

lucy2 I have been laughing for three full minutes at your comment...it DOES look like a black bra is on his head...what a haul for a robber, lingerie. How do you fence that?" Jan 19, 12 4:52 PM

State Police: Wrong-Way Driver Was Intoxicated

Yes...if anyone knew his whereabouts prior to driving in that state of drunkeness, they should step up and at least advise the police. Accepting the responsibility for making such a report should not, however, be tantamount to accepting the liability for the accident. Chances are everyone's judgement was impaired in a situation of drunkeness similar to the wrong way driver's. NO bartender on the East End would allow someone THAT drunk to get in a car and drive."
