Montauk community notes

Nice photo, Joan. I was hit by homesickness as soon as I got on the train. The cars used to rattle and rock so slowly through Hither Woods and the Hamptons- and you could ride between the cars, sitting on the metal steps in the sun. This time I went from the windows on one side of an airconditioned car to the other trying to stock up on visual memories--only to catch blurred glimpses of paths, farms, vineyards, houses. It does not behoove us to speed. I read your columns whenever I want to wiggle the knife in my heart. Many thanks!" Jul 20, 09 8:02 PM

The future of design

Thanks for the great article about the beau monde and design trends. My social affiliates are already into the distressed rustic look. The whimsy comes in as the caprices of the work environment, the bondage is from debt. The silver outdoors is that of tarps. Why not make the ubiquitous tarp in a rainbow of colors, shapes and patterns? The market is ready. There are a number of people living in outdoor rooms right now. Fortunately the farm is in style because it will become more and more of a necessity.

Yard sale reality check

I'm surprised "25 Cent" didn't show up. She picks up item after item and, ignoring price tags, asks "25 cent? 25 cent?"

It's funny how some people feel free to be rude at yard sales. I wonder if they ask waiters if the food has germs on it." Dec 11, 09 8:53 PM

In-home bars, pub rooms and libation stations

Much more elegant than our shebeen in the woods at the back of the pasture.
No pretty glassware or flatscreen... but you can "P" with a view and also win prizes for the Rat Toss." Jan 20, 10 5:03 AM

Partnering to put art in public places

This has been working in other cities. Some stores are being turned into temporary art galleries with displays changing weekly, openings on Saturdays.
Perhaps it would be appropriate to have a live sand-painting exhibition or contest.
(See Youtube, search "sand painting").
I, for one, would be happy to donate artwork for an auction to raise money for the electric bills, etc." Feb 11, 10 11:39 PM

RSVP Inc offers $200 for dog foster homes

That is a wonderful idea. I wish the same could be done for rescue horses. Sound, gentle and trained horses are going to the "kill buyers" these days. The horse rescues are full. I have room for another rescue animal but not the money for any extra vet bills. I've been offered the use of 15 acres but I need fencing, gates and lean-tos. I can muster volunteers/friends to do labor because so many are underemployed.
There is talk of creating a food bank for horses to help the owners keep their animals at home." Feb 12, 10 12:09 AM

Stony Brook University will announce drastic cuts to Stony Brook Southampton

I will teach classes for free. I'm sure there are lots of others who would do the same- perhaps retired people or those who are underemployed in their chosen professions.

High school tuition eats up funds in feeder districts

Notes from Montauk, May 26

If you don't want to apply DEET to your skin, there are companies selling bug-repellent clothing. Ex Officio sells a line called Buzz Off infused with permethrin (a natural repellent found in chrysanthemums). I've had good results with the hiker socks and the nylon convertible pants tucked into them. The socks are light in color- helpful for spotting ticks." May 27, 10 10:09 PM

Art in the service of the state. Truth is not important. Much information is flawed.
Barter in a bookstore/gallery doesn't pay the rent. Ideas to explore.

I wonder if Mr.Neidich gives away his art or if he sells it for money.

Great article. My compliments to the writer.

Fallen soldier's remains arrive on the East End

My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Lt. Theinert. In the months to come, may you find some comfort in the words of all these good people of the East End.

I was moved by the kindness of the other people here. I didn't know how many cared and how much.
