Southampton Town Police Officer Saves Baby Who Stopped Breathing

Feb 10, 2016 9:57 AM

A Southampton Town Police officer saved a 1-year-old infant’s life last week after he stopped breathing for unknown reasons.

Officer Kristian LoRusso responded to a home in Westhampton at about 8:10 a.m. on February 3, after the baby’s sister reported that her brother was having “trouble breathing,” authorities said. Officer LoRusso arrived about two minutes later and, although the family did not speak English, he realized that the baby’s face had turned blue. The baby also lacked a pulse, Officer LoRusso said when reached on Tuesday.

Officer LoRusso said he immediately began CPR on the baby, which included chest compressions and rescue breathing, until the infant began to breathe again on his own.

“I just kind of went through training,” Officer LoRusso recalled this week, describing the situation as “intense.”

“Slowly, he was getting back to normal,” the officer added. “He started crying, and a normal shade of color came back.”

Members of the Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance responded to the home and transported the infant, his sister and their mother to the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for further medical assistance.

The baby has since been released from the hospital and is home with his family, according to police.

Fortunately, Officer LoRusso said he was only a few miles from the home when the emergency call came in. “I just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” he said.

Are the regular police bashers too gutless to chime in with an "attaboy" for a job well-done?
