Southampton School District Fires Security Guard

Jun 18, 2014 11:00 AM

The Southampton Board of Education on Tuesday night unanimously voted to fire a part-time security guard who is being held in Connecticut after boarding the Cross Sound Ferry with a loaded gun.

Shawn Douglas, 42, has worked as a part-time security guard for the school district for the past four years. He was arrested by New London Police on May 23 after threatening a person in New York State before boarding the ferry, allegedly with the intent to hurt a family member in Massachusetts.

When the ferry docked in Connecticut, New London Police approached and detained Mr. Douglas, who was carrying a loaded Mac-10 pistol. He was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, breach of peace and possession of marijuana.

This week, New York State Police confirmed that Mr. Douglas is still being held in Connecticut, where he was arrested, but said additional menacing charges will be filed in New York when he is transferred back across state lines.

Southampton School District officials did not comment on the termination, which went into effect that day, at the meeting, citing the need to protect the privacy of personnel.

However, District Superintendent Dr. Scott Farina did say the district has decided to review security procedures for all three of its schools moving forward. District officials, he said, have met with local law enforcement representatives from Southampton Town, Southampton Village and the New York State Troopers, to evaluate and try to improve the policies already in place.

Everything has to go through the Board, so they had to wait for a BOE meeting. I doubt he was getting paid since security guards get paid hourly rather than salary.
