Former Southampton High School Coach Killed In Car Crash

Aug 25, 2015 3:08 PM

A former Southampton High School coach and teacher, who had resigned in 2009 after being arrested on drug charges, was killed in a single-car crash early Saturday morning.

Ryan McCready, 30, of Shirley died early Saturday morning after his car veered off William Floyd Parkway in Ridge and into the woods, just north of Longwood Road. Suffolk County Police said it is unclear what time the accident occurred, but that a passing motorist noticed the car in the woods and notified authorities at about 6:23 a.m.

Police said it is unclear how the crash occurred, and that the investigation is still ongoing. Mr. McCready was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr. McCready, once an East Quogue resident, served as the head wrestling coach at Southampton High School, as well as a health and physical education teacher at the district’s elementary school, up until August 2009. He quit after he was put on administrative leave following his arrest by State Police in March 2009, when he was charged with driving while impaired by drugs and possession of a small amount of heroin and a hypodermic needle, both misdemeanors.

He had also been arrested in September 2008 in Riverhead and charged with driving while impaired and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Such a sad end to a tragic life. He was a gifted teacher and a kind person. I guess he couldn't conquer his demons. Sad day.
