SUV flips in Montauk crash Sunday

Sep 29, 2009 5:04 PM

Three people were injured in a head-on collision on Route 27 in Montauk just before 8 a.m. on Sunday, according to East Hampton Town Police.

Joseph Norton, 28, of Center Moriches, was driving a flatbed tow truck eastbound on Route 27 at a curve near the scenic overlook at Hither Hills when he passed the vehicle in front of him, according to police. The driver of the vehicle that was passed told police that before Mr. Norton could get back into his lane, he collided with a westbound 2005 Nissan Pathfinder.

The accident left the Nissan on its side, suspended on the guardrail in the eastbound lane.

Thomas Murphy, 50, of North Carolina, was driving the Nissan with two passengers, Shannon Murphy, 24, and Keryn Murphy, 20, police said.

According to the accident report, Mr. Murphy and Shannon Murphy each suffered cuts to the head, and Keryn Murphy suffered internal bleeding. All three were taken to Southampton Hospital for treatment by Montauk Fire Department ambulance.

Mr. Norton and his passenger refused medical attention, according to police.

A flatbed tow truck passing on that part of the road. That guy's an idiot
so he can get somewhere a minute faster... This is the problem with our roads,
I'm sure he tailgated the guy for miles before that as well... 2 words for that guy.

does anyone know the name of the tow company? I'm looking for a job and I'm sure he just lost his.

So... let me get this straight. A guy driving a flatbed wrecker truck chooses to PASS a vehicle in a DOUBLE YELLOW section of the road that also features a CURVE and a HILL ? ? ? ?

I hope he's being charged with something....

NOT EVERYTHING IS AS IT MIGHT APPEAR. THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY AND THEN THERE'S THE TRUTH

How else could it have happened other than it "appears"?

Actually, in response to you as well as "INS", I would love to know if you know the driver in question and if "INS" knows the insurance carrier of the same. Where in the article does it say that the passed driver accelerated?

The article is pretty clear about the directions in which each vehicle was traveling and that the truck was on the wrong side of the road. The driver needs to lose his license at the very least. ...more

just to set the record straight, i was driving the car that the guy in the flatbed passed. if i was speeding up so he could not get back in the east bound lane i would be dead. i was at least 100 yards behind him when he got to the top of the hill at hit the yellow suv head on. i took the picture from where my car came to a stop and i got out to assist and call 911. the guy never tried to get back into the east bound lane.

im and emt and ive seen alot of accidents like these tail gating and cuttin off....what werent you doing that pissed this guy off enough to pass you...alright we could even give the towtruck jerk the benefit of the doubt and say....what WERE you doing.....;) ........for him to cut u off up a hill around the curve in the rain....it had to be urgent in those conditions.....

unbelievable! Thankfully these poor people were not killed by the idiot who decided that double yellow lines apply to everyone else - not him!

It is a matter of zero importance whether or not there are two sides to every story. There are two sides to the road as well and the truck was on the wrong side. There was a double yellow line on a curve. This towing company should be a lot more careful of who they hire.

LOOK AT THE PICTURE NO DEBRIS ON THE WESTBOUND SIDE IMPACT MUST HAVE HAPPEND IN THE EASTBOUND LANE.. DRIVER UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ROAD EARLY AM AND RAIN YOU ADD IT UP. JUST MYN OPINION YOU MORONS

maybe the court and your insurance company will buy that, dear. Clean it up a little first though, 'k? Otherwise it sounds just a tad like protesting too much.

I couldnt tell you who was at fault.i just read the article and the picture did'nt make sence too me. I'm just glad we didnt have to read about any deaths either way .I think we all should drive as if everyone else is blind and stupid. That way we do not have anymore accidents and insurance premiums drop. I also believe everyone should be skill tested every time you renew your license. i hate accidents is'nt there is enough traffic on the east end.

the accident took place in the westbound lane 30 yards or so behind where the yellow suv ended up. the tow truck hit him head on and was travelling east in the westbound lane. yellow suv flipped several times and ended up across the road on the guard rail. the guy swerved at the last minute and the tow truck hit him in the front on the passenger side. the tow truck ended up along the guard rail about 40 yards or so behind the yellow suv. you can see the driver standing on the back of the truck looking ...more

im not on either side....but being that i see alot of these accidents the are no ones fault until a judgement is made....but im gonna try to give both the benefit of the doubt.....if the truck driver is east bound passing in the west bound lane...why would the suv proceed to the east bound lane to avoid it and run the risk of causing another accident with the vehicle behind the tow truck, 55mph for the suv to the car behind the towtruck is still like hitting a brick wall, why didnt he just pull ...more

As the driver of the suv, all can say is "fishy's" comments are accurate and I thank him for that. We have returned to NC. where my daughters will continue to receive medical care. We ALWAYS wear seat belts.

All I need is my W endorsement.

Who was this guy's employer?

If he needed to pass so badly, what was wrong with the Napeague Stretch, where there is much better visiblity? He had no business pulling that move where he did, and I'm a professional.

Sometimes, I think the CDL exam and road test are too easy, no matter how much people complain about the road test.

I missed two on the basic exam when I took my written test, one on my air brakes, perfect on my tank, ...more
