There’s still no word on what Stop & Shop has planned for the King Kullen and Wild By Nature supermarkets in Hampton Bays.
Stop & Shop announced that the company had purchased the Long-Island based supermarket chain back in January, and had said that the transition was expected to be completed within the first quarter of 2019.
However, in an email last week, Stefanie Shuman, a Stop & Shop spokesperson, said that the company was continuing “to work through customary closing conditions,” noting that the transaction had “not yet closed.”
To date, Stop & Shop officials have declined to say whether the grocery chain plans to close any stores, specifically in Hampton Bays, which already has a Stop & Shop, in addition to a King Kullen and a Wild By Nature, all within two miles of each other.
“We have nothing new to share,” Ms. Shuman wrote in her latest email.
Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman added that he has not been apprised of any plans regarding any of the Montauk Highway properties.
However, he explained that the existing King Kullen in Hampton Bays was built as part of a Planned Development District — a now defunct zoning tool — which essentially limits Stop & Shop from using the property for “anything other than another grocery store.” He added that the process to remove those restrictions “would not be a simple thing.”
PDD , CPF, CDF are all a joke and are used as a chip for the local government to do as they wish. Look at all the trouble these programs now bring as they get "modified" and not staying the course as originally designed.
EQ, Flanders, Riverside, Noy and HBays will continue to be abused by this town on behalf ...more of Sag, EH, SH, WH & Rburg.
No company that desires to turn a profit would pay to operate three competing stores ...more within a one mile radius of each other. It's not going to happen. With the recent purchase of the Best Market chain by German discounter Lidl finding a new supermarket tenant for the two soon to be abandoned properties will be difficult at best.
Unless federal regulators demand an alternate plan it appears that a Stop and Shop monopoly between Westhampton Beach and Amagansett is a sure thing.
Wegman's new stores are four times the size of the town's limit. Modern stores need much more space than the town allows to execute successful business plans. You'll get your Lidl in Westhampton Beach as the Best Market ...more there is downgraded to meet their standards. Be careful what you wish for.
