UPDATE: County Identifies Other Locations Where Person With Measles May Have Spread Disease

A confirmed case of measles was reported in Hampton Bays. COURTESY CDC
Apr 29, 2019 6:53 AM

UPDATE: Friday, 1:45 p.m.

County officials on Friday released more information on locations where the person infected with measles may have posed a health risk to Southampton Town residents and visitors.

According to a press release, anyone who visited the King Kullen on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays between 2:30 and 5 p.m. on April 20 or the CVS drug store on Main Street in Southampton between 4:45 and 7 p.m. on April 20 may have been exposed to measles.

The times reflect the period that the infected person was at the locations and a two-hour period after the individual left the area, as the virus remains alive in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours, the release said.

Anyone who may have been exposed to measles should contact their health care provider to assess their measles immunity, the health department urged. Anyone with symptoms is advised to contact their health care provider, a local clinic, or a local emergency department before going for care in order to help to prevent others at those facilities from being exposed to the illness.

Anyone with questions can call the Suffolk County Department of Health Services Bureau of Communicable Disease Control at 631-854-0333, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. After hours and on the weekends, call 631-852-4820.

UPDATE: Friday, 11:38 a.m.

BNB Bank officials issued a statement on the measles situation on Facebook on Friday morning, vowing to continue to work with the health services department in the matter.

“Employees and customers, who may have been exposed, at the Hampton Bays branch have been notified and appropriate action has been taken,” the statement read. “Note that the measles virus can live in an airspace for up to two hours. Since the branch closed shortly after the customer left, we believe exposure is limited.”

ORIGINAL STORY:

Suffolk County Department of Health Services officials are urging anyone who visited BNB Bank in Hampton Bays on Saturday, April 20, to contact the department because they may have been exposed to measles.

Anyone who was at the bank, located at 48 East Montauk Highway, on Saturday between 12:15 p.m. and 1 p.m. may have been exposed to the virus, a Thursday, April 25, press release reads, and they should contact the department at 631-854-0333 during regular business hours or 631-852-4820 at all other times.

The department said a laboratory confirmed a case of measles in an adult who had recently arrived in the United States from another country. The case does not appear to be related to the measles outbreak occurring in the state.

People who were born before 1957, have had measles, have received two doses of measles, mumps rubella—MMR—vaccine, or have been confirmed through lab tests to be immune to the disease are considered to be protected from measles, according to the health services department.

Officials said if anyone has been exposed to measles, they should seek treatment to prevent the disease from spreading. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes and a rash.

“People are considered infectious from four days before to four days after the appearance of the rash,” the press release stated. “Symptoms usually appear 10-12 days after exposure but may appear as early as 7 days and as late as 21 days after exposure.”

The health services department said the best way to be protected from measles is to receive two doses of the MMR vaccine. It recommends the first dose be given to children between the ages of 12 and 15 months old and the second dose should be given between the ages of 4 and 6 years old.

Do you know what the hardest part of traveling to another habitable world would be?

Probably the survival suit. Chances are, one could not run barefoot in it's (said exoplanet's) version of grass on it's surface. That could come later, if ever. Viral and/or bacterial life can be fatal to an individual right here on Earth. Imagine colonizing elsewhere. BUT...

There is this thing which can prevent epidemics and pandemics right here on Earth.

They're called "vaccines"...

travesty - there are too many families who have been blinded by the media - many of us know the truth about vaccinations. Do not vaccinate just because you're friends or parents or friends of your parents or children of your friends or millions of other people or doctors or anyone tells you - Vaccinations may prevent disease but at what cost!?

You most likely consume more mercury from fish than one would any vaccine.

Certain diseases which are severe and potentially debilitating can be protected against/prevented by a deceased version of said disease. If polio makes a comeback, perhaps you'll get a clue.

The human immune system is designed to be triggered by disease. We evolved coping with a very unsanitary existence. We're (well, most anyway) built to acquire immunity to disease early on. The only necessity is exposure. Hence, Jonas Salk...

And that belief is based on ONE study from 1997 which has since been thoroughly discredited. It was a poorly designed and executed study, and the author had undisclosed financial conflicts of interest and other ethical violations which led to his losing his medical license. Several subsequent studies failed to find any connection at all between vaccines and autism.

Not sure if the individual in the story had a choice about vaccinations, but those in the US who choose not to receive vaccinations for themselves, or for their children (for whatever reasons) are kind of living like parasites....they live off of healthy hosts (those who have been vaccinated). Just a thought.

You wouldn't recognize a "Science based fact" if it jumped up and bit you. You have opinions, no doubt of concerned, intelligent people but there is nothing therein that links vaccination to any of the disabilities claimed. In your hours of video there is not is single cause and effect link cited that scientifically indicates current modern immunizations have any part in responsibility for such unfortunate developments.

Not to worry, we have a problem with measles in our country already. Anti -vaxer are being feed false theories on vaccinations. One person is one to many to be spreading measles, don’t look to asylum seekers as the root of the problem.

From The Association of health care journalist .....President Trump, along with immigration opponents, repeatedly assert that immigrants are bringing infectious diseases to the U.S., but never provide any data to back up their claims.

That is because virtually every public health expert says there isn’t any evidence that this is the case.

if someone seeking admittance thru border crossings is found to suffer from TB they are turned back....who many are infected with TB are illegally here? They didn't get screened for anything . So while the cut and paste job may be fact it does not take into consideration the many who have not had the benefit of medical clearance to be here.

I was just making a point with the post, post a counter a study that backs up your question, might be a valid point, or just conjecture.

Fed I work in healthcare. I have firsthand knowledge. I'm asking a question not looking for cut and paste studies. Is it possible that disease comes across the border unchecked? The people running through the desert are not checked until it shows up in the Emergency room. period. No study or any internet source is needed. Cause we know if its on the internet its fact. I'm telling you from actually seeing and being there.

Vaccine trials only enroll healthy children (and adults) in the study protocol. After approval, vaccine studies are recommend for everyone with a chronic illness with no research to evaluate the effect of the vaccine - and it's ingredients - on the overall health of the recipient.

can you be more specific - really hard to understand what you're trying to say.
do you have any experience with medical research or are you just pasting stuff from the internet?
