Southampton Democrats Bring Fred Havemeyer To Court Over His Petition To Run For Supervisor

Fred Havemeyer
Aug 2, 2017 10:58 AM

Fred Havemeyer, a candidate for Southampton Town supervisor, will appear in court on Monday to defend the petition he has filed with the Suffolk County Board of Elections.

Mr. Havemeyer’s petition is being challenged by the Southampton Town Democratic Committee, whose chairman, Gordon Herr, said there are “major irregularities,” although he declined to point out specific examples.

Mr. Herr criticized the nonprofit Long Island Environmental Voters Forum for pushing Mr. Havemeyer, a Democrat from Bridgehampton, to seek a primary for the Democratic nomination for supervisor, mainly because of his promise to vote down “The Hills at Southampton,” a proposed luxury golf course resort community targeting nearly 600 acres in East Quogue. The controversial proposal, which awaits approval from the town, is to build 117 residential units and an 18-hole golf course along Spinney Road.

“This was brought about by an outside special interest group for their own purposes,” Mr. Herr said of Mr. Havemeyer’s candidacy. “It behooves us to protect the democratic process by challenging their petitions.”

Southampton Town Councilwoman Julie Lofstad, a Democrat who is running for reelection, said that she too supports the challenge to Mr. Havemeyer’s petition. She said that several people told her they saw her name at the top of his petition, which suggested that signing it would support her candidacy as well.

“Anybody can run for office—that’s how we do it in the United States of America,” Ms. Lofstad said. “But I don’t think it’s the right thing to put someone’s name on the petition without them knowing.”

David Reisfield, executive director of the Long Island Environmental Voters Forum and Mr. Havemeyer’s campaign manager, said Mr. Havemeyer is not worried about the petition challenge and will continue to campaign “full force” against Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman, an Independence Party member who is seeking the Democratic Party’s endorsement.

Mr. Havemeyer has retained a lawyer, Vincent J. Messina Jr. of Sinnreich Kosakoff & Messina LLP in Central Islip, to handle the upcoming litigation.

“The Southampton Democratic machine is trying to suppress the free choice of their party members,” Mr. Havemeyer said in a statement. “Instead of allowing a free and fair primary to take place, they throw impediments in the way of anyone who cares to challenge their hand-picked candidate.”

... "outside special interest group" consists of citizens concerned about the environment, the aquifer the bays and the sanctity of the East End. Real bad dudes!

The Southampton Town Democratic Party has revealed itself to be as corrupt as they used to say the Town GOP was.

There will be no "major irregularities" found -- that's just wishful thinking on Herr's part.

Fred Havemeyer has staked out his position on a major issue of long-standing contention, and is counting on two things: support from those who agree with that position, and those who admired his years of service on the Town Board of Trustees.

That's all anyone has ...more

Sorry Charlie, but the two party system will run it's course for quite some time.

With the current Republican track record of no solutions, perhaps the people will sway the other way going forward.

Of course, people have never been known to act in their own self interest when they're smart about it. Ergo, Trump was elected because the other side couldn't counter dirty politics from those dirty as they come. Perception is 9/10 of reality...

Mr. Wheeler, it's not "all on" me and it never is. Anyone who feels it's "all on" him to defend a position on this lame comment board is in a sorry state indeed. Still, there are some things I know about this which you don't, and I'll tell you what they are.

First, though, where do you get the charge that the Southampton Democrats are "corrupt"? Even if the Town Dems were all wrong about these petitions, even if they were being pigheaded, litigious, overprotective of their turf, even ...more

Thank you for your full response, TB, an uncommonly testy one, I might add. commenter

This is probably due to the misunderstanding of the intention of "all on you." I meant, simply, that having staked out my position, I was putting the "ball in your court," so to speak, since you had yet to be heard from, and as the Town Democratic Party's highest profile and most articular commenter, I wanted to hear from you. (As my "invitation" stated: "it's all on you now. What have I missed or ...more

You know, Mr. Wheeler, it really and truly is hard to hack through the underbrush of your alternative reality and try to get through to the simple facts on the other side. Among other things, you've got this fixation that the Southampton Dems are somehow "corrupt," and I probably shouldn't let it bother me, as it's so palpably bogus, but . . . .

Now that you've made your charge a little more specific, I'll give it a go. You ascribe corruption to the way we picked our candidate for Supervisor, ...more

Challenging nominating petitions is routine in politics. It is a sign of how our elected officials think. They try to keep competitors off the ballot to enhance their chances for election. Just more evidence of corruption in government/politics. Julie Lofstad is a relative neophyte but seems to be learning quickly. So disappointed in her.

It amazes me that the criticism of the petition is based on non-democrats obtaining the signatures when the democratic leadership's chosen candidate IS NOT A DEMOCRAT!!!!! IMO, as long as the signatures on the petition are registered dems, they are valid. Sorry Julie seems to be betting on the wrong horse.

The southampton dems are the worst, cannot stand for real change, same old same old. Really sad

Very typicle of Democrats. Especially a la Hillary. Back room they pick a winner then plot (with knives in hand) against anyone else (Bernie). Not very responsive to the people. All those Democrats who abhor Trump fail to realize by rigging the primary for Hilary they ignored the will of their party. Bernie might have won save the unethical interference of the Democratic Party fixers. Go soak your heads. Then allow the will of the east end Democratic Party to pick their candidate. Julie Lofstad is agreeing with the challenge based on what "several people told her". about Fred's petition. Shouldn't she ask to see it herself or some proof? I lose faith everyday.

I'll go out on a limb here and guess they aren't going to court with only rumors as evidence.

What happened in court???
By knitter (1802), Southampton on Aug 4, 17 2:10 PM
Republican and Democratic election commissioners ruled unanimously that 362 of the 699 signatures filed by backers of Havemeyer were not legitimate. He's out.
