Westhampton Community Center Building Auction Comes Up Blank

For the second time, the Town of Southampton’s attempt to auction off the former Westhampton Community Center building at 406 Mill Road came up blank, with nobody placing a bid on the dilapidated building.

Town Clerk Sundy Schermeyer confirmed on Tuesday, November 13, that no bids came in by the November 7 deadline. “You can’t give it away,” she quipped.

The last time the building was put up for auction was last year, with bids starting at $540,000. When nobody placed a bid, town officials re-evaluated the property and opened it back up for bids on October 18.

This time, the opening bid was $400,000, $140,000 less than last year. But the drop in price was made after officials acknowledged that the 2,640-square-foot, two-story building on a half-acre lot would cost more than $300,000 to restore.

Before going out to bid in 2017, town officials changed the underlying zoning of the parcel from office district to hamlet residential to hopefully attract prospective bidders and increase the property’s value. The change opened up the opportunity for retail shops, an office or a medical facility to move in, but the building would have been required to keep a residential facade.

On Friday, Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman said it was a tough market, but could not say whether the market or the location was to blame for the lack of bids. Mr. Schneiderman said in October that while the property was not in good shape, it was still a good property.

The Bel Aire idea is incredible and gets rid of the problem. Do you have a solution or just botch all day

so now it's a Bel-Aire "idea" and not a "plan". Don't want to get behind a picture off the internet like kindergarten show and tell? The "idea" to have the Town purchase it and thereby forcing the owner to vacate and have it demolished is a good "idea" that can be accomplished with CPF monies so the community will know the end game - and not the moving target at the whim of one elected official.

Buying with CPF is not a good idea. We need motels (real motels, not this illegal dump) or condos to draw people to HB. We are finally getting some nice restaurants in HB (Centro - and he's opening a new place in the old Friendly's, 1 North, Hampton Gyro) and the Diner is still closed. These restaurants and existing food places like Scotto's, Inn Between, etc. need customers to stay in business. The places on the water will thrive anyway, but get rid of all the motels and any other attractions ...more

INCREDIBLE for sure. Let me point out:
1. Southampton has no CDF. Yes Southampton has no CDF as they did not keep up with the paper work file. It now sits with the governor in Albany. A few weeks ago the SHTB said it would arrive any day. So is Christmas.
2. The SHTB and the town of Southampton has never done such a plan. So there is no end to end plan. There is support to show the plan is half baked.

That is a bald-faced lie sir. People do not hang out on that property and where they do stay is kept clean. Also, there are no more than 20 to 25 men waiting there and not all at the same time.

Tenn Tom would you support raising $$ within the community to house the people who wait outside? They need affordable housing, $$ for living, schooling, etc. Possibly any overflow can be housed at the school down the street. Will you step up and "walk the walk"?

HamptonDad, I read a lot of your posts and I agree with most of them, but I don't think you followed this. Jay's proposalswas for the Town to buy the property contingent on the owner vacating the units, get all the permits and zoning changes in place for 10 CONDOS. However, he never presented anything in writing. I agree with your concept about needing motels in the area - too many are being used for year round residences. Approximately 15 years ago quite a number of us from WH/WHB met in that building with Town representatives, when the building was still somewhat functional. We were meeting about a possible playground. Town said they'd build us a playground. They didn't. At the same time the Town also said they planned to renovate this building, make it really nice for young and old. They didn't. It's an abandoned disgraceful eyesore. The WH Aquatic center the Town talked about never happened either. Pathetic. ...more

Exactly, GAL. Taxes keep increasing with nothing to show for it. In 2008 the Town spent $3 mil for the WH Bauer property on Mill Road to build a community center. There's still nothing there. No park. Nothing. Other properties aren't maintained (Ponquogue, Tiana, the Activity Center, etc.). How about the "community center at Gabreski"? When's that coming? Increased taxes, all talk, no action.

and now "Bel-Aire gate" - oral representation from Supervisor Schneiderman weeks before the election to purchase the property and get it ready to auction it off as a condo development. IMHO, this is just a distraction to avoid the the real issues of the unsafe conditions, overcrowding and misuse of properties at this and other sites. Our safety, quality of life and taxes are all just a political game to some politicians until someone gets hurt or they end up indicted.

If my understanding was correct, the development of a community facility at Gabreski Airport hinged on the Town selling the former American Legion property on Mill Rd. The income from that sale would have provided the town's contribution towards the community center. The only way the Legion property becomes salable would be if the demolition was already complete and the property certified as environmentally safe. How unfortunate for us then, if that’s the case. What has the Town provided recreationally in the WH area? $4 mil in CPF for the Sag Harbor movie theatre and we (potentially) still can’t get a community center? Red Creek park (w/ skatepark), and beautiful SYS—not close to WH. Town spends $3 mil for land on Mill Road in 2008 and does NOTHING with it a decade out. Town couldn’t even maintain and promote this WH property they owned. It’s disgraceful.
