Town Requests Bids For Advertising At East Hampton Airport

Feb 4, 2014 10:31 AM

The Town of East Hampton requested bids for advertising concession services for the East Hampton Airport on January 23, according to a resolution posted on the town’s website.

The Purchasing Department sent requests for proposals to “a dozen or so” advertising agencies, said East Hampton Town Councilwoman Kathee Burke-Gonzalez.

“We budgeted $23,000 for revenue from ads,” said Ms. Burke-Gonzalez, “which is up from what we’ve projected in previous years.”

Ms. Burke-Gonzalez, who has more than 30 years of experience in advertising, has high hopes for this year’s bid, given her past experience.

“My background is in advertising, which is why I know this will be lucrative,” she said.

In previous years, she added, advertisements typically showcased high-end real estate and luxury items, which is likely to continue.

“Whatever’s being advertised has to be in keeping with our community,” she said. “It must be tasteful. We don’t want to have tobacco products or something like that.”

In terms of the vehicles on which advertisements will appear, almost any mechanism, including product placement, is fair game, both inside and outside the building.

“Right now it’s a lot of oversized posters that you’d see at a bus shelter,” the councilwoman said. “But there are also teak chairs with gold plates from Hildreth’s, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be print.”

Ms. Burke-Gonzalez said she hopes that a campaign launch date will be announced when an advertising firm is decided upon.

“We’re a little late in the game, doing this in January,” she said. “Typically, bids will take place in the fourth quarter of an agency’s year, so I’m not sure what we’ll see from them.”

In the future, the councilwoman plans to request proposals in the fall in order to give firms as much time as possible.

The bidding deadline is February 12, Ms. Burke-Gonzalez said, and the board plans to award the job to a firm at the Town Board meeting on February 20.
