Cops: Flanders Man Charged After Having Sex With Teen

Dec 6, 2011 12:44 PM

A Flanders man was arrested last Thursday night, December 1, after New York State Police said they received a complaint that he had sex with a 15-year-old girl and was about to leave the country.

According to State Troopers, the teenage victim, along with her sister and mother, arrived at the State Police barracks in Riverside at about 11:40 a.m. last Thursday to report that a 27-year-old acquaintance, Wilmer Escalante, had sexually assaulted the teen. The girl told police that she had befriended Mr. Escalante and that at about 3 a.m. on November 4 she allowed him into her bedroom, where they “engaged in sexual relations.”

The victim’s 22-year-old sister told investigators that she had heard that Mr. Escalante, who police said has been living in the country illegally for 11 years, had bought a one-way ticket to his native Honduras after learning that her sister had been telling others she had sexual contact with him.

Mr. Escalante, who works in the construction industry, was arrested at 6:20 p.m. on his way home from work and charged with two counts of criminal sex act in the third degree, a felony, and one count of sex abuse in the third degree, a misdemeanor, State Troopers said. Upon his arrest, he was found to be in possession of his passport and a plane ticket to Honduras for Saturday, Troopers said.

Mr. Escalante was sent to the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside in lieu of $132,000 bail, following his Friday arraignment in Southampton Town Justice Court, State Police Investigator Steven Collins said.

In the interests of practicality, what with the over-crowding in our jails and prisons, and the costs involved with prosecutions and housing the incarcerated, perhaps he just should have been escorted to his plane departure in handcuffs, and full particulars of the charges against him forwarded to the Honduran Departamento Nacional de Investigaciones.

Yes, they're a bunch of corrupt Keystone Kops, but their Roman Catholic sensibilities would know how do deal with Senor Escalante, and think ...more

Almost half of the Honduran populace consists of people who consider themselves Roman Catholic, and traditionally they take Escalantea harsh view of the illicit carnal knowledge of under-aged females.

Send Senor Escalante home to be delt with there!

...and how exactly do you have this vast first hand knowledge of the the Honduran police and their procedures?

... it took the post to be an unnecessary 'dis of a religion.

HB: Please explain how you construe what I wrote (typo and all) to be "vast first hand knowledge."

WR: What "'dis?" I carefully refrained from including and "unnecessary" references to clergy, and I stand by my assertion that Escalante would, because of the nature of his offense, probably be dealt with more harshly in his native country than by the court system here.
