Car flips over guardrail on Flanders Road, crashes into utility pole

Aug 26, 2009 2:17 PM

A 65-year-old man and his two passengers suffered minor injuries last week after he fell asleep behind the wheel, struck and flipped over a guard rail, and then slammed into a telephone pole in Flanders.

Southampton Town Police said the driver of the car, whom they refused to identify, was traveling east on Flanders Road at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19, when he apparently fell asleep and veered off the road. The force of the accident caused the wooden telephone pole to snap in half, according to Southampton Town traffic control officers on the scene last week.

The two passengers in the vehicle, a 36-year-old man and a 26-year-old man, suffered minor injuries. The driver and both passengers were wearing their seat belts, according to Sergeant Matthew Helmsteadt of the Southampton Town Police.

All three men were transported via Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released, according to police.

Traffic control officers, as well as representatives from the Long Island Power Authority and Verizon, remained on the scene well into the evening, working to remove the car and the damaged pole.

LIPA representatives did not return calls seeking comment.
