Eastport-South Manor High School year kicked off with a creative fundraiser held by the senior class. The students came together in late August to fill the school parking lot with painted murals in the lot’s parking spaces. It was the first time the school has done something like this — and it’s been a hit within the student body.

“There are three seniors who were all a part of the process,” said Principal Salvatore Alaimo. “Hanna Engelhardt, Sage Papile and Kiran Miller all discussed the layout, and made it go into action.”

Hanna was at the forefront of the project.

“I saw an article about some schools in Florida that painted their parking spots. It seemed like such an amazing idea that we could do here, too. I talked to Mr. Alaimo about fundraising, got the paperwork needed to propose the idea, got everything passed and figured out the logistics of it all,” she explained.

The fundraiser was held on August 29, and more than $2,500 was raised that day. Students paid $50 to paint a spot and brought their own supplies to paint. The money will go toward events held throughout the school year, including prom.

“It was a great fundraiser, and anyone could participate. Kids came together from all different groups and supported each other,” Hanna said.

“This is something we’ve been talking about since the end of our sophomore year,” Sage said. “We brought it up within student government, and all thought it would be really awesome to see everyone come together to get it done. Hopefully, we’ll start a new tradition.

“It was really nice that everyone was able to have their own personalized spots. We were really able to show who our student body is. Everyone at the fundraiser was in agreement about how wonderful the turnout was.”

“I can’t wait to see all the younger grades continue to do this,” Kiran added. “I’m also a part of student government, and, I have to say, Hanna did a really great job putting this project into action. It was such a fun day, and it was especially nice having everyone come together. There were a lot of families there, and everyone was helping each other paint their spots.”

The Eastport-South Manor High School plans to hold another fundraiser to repaint the parking lot on November 21 of this year.
