A group of East Quogue residents is holding the first official fundraiser next month supporting the effort to incorporate the hamlet as a village.

The East Quogue Village Exploratory Committee will hold a cocktail party fundraiser at Dockers Waterside Marina and Restaurant in East Quogue on July 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. The fundraiser will give the community the chance to meet the committee members behind the push and to ask questions about the proposal.

Tickets are $75 and can be purchased at www.Eventbrite.com. The event can be found by searching “Cocktails on the Bay.”

The fundraising will help the committee cover incorporation costs as it continues to move forward with its efforts.

Gregory Celi Jr., who sits on the committee, said the group began collecting petitions last week. In order to become a village, the committee would have to file a petition with Southampton Town that includes signatures from at least 20 percent of registered voters in the proposed village’s taxing district.

Then, it is up to Southampton Town’s supervisors office to validate the signatures and set public hearings on the incorporation effort. After that, the town would hold a referendum vote in the proposed taxing district. If that vote passes, the village is formed.

The committee will be going door to door to gather signatures and will hold signature events in the hamlet to get a completed petition.

An informational meeting about the proposed village will be held next Wednesday, June 27, at 7 p.m. at East Quogue Elementary School.
