First-graders at Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional Catholic School recreated the Southampton Village in their cafeteria on June 10—and behind every store, restaurant or building replica, there was a proud first-grader. The project required the kids to go to the business they were assigned and learn about it. From there, they would recreate a 3D replica with cardboard, markers, clay and other supplies.

“It was fun, because she got to work with us,” class mom Priscilla Hoffert said of her daughter, Jaden Hoffert, who recreated Sip ’n’ Soda. “She also got to learn about community.”

The replica is complete with food made out of clay, tables, chairs, the phone booth, and even a picture of Jaden with Sip ’n’ Soda owner Mark Parash. Jaden noted that her favorite drink there is the “Lime Rickey.”

Mr. Parash was so thrilled when he saw the replica that he displayed it in the store window. He even joked that the project looked so good that it made his building look bad.

“I thought it was great—we’re getting lots of compliments,” Mr. Parash said. “It’s nice to be looked at as a place that people want to share their memories with.”

Eventually, the students were able to show off their masterpieces to their parents, classmates and even some business owners.

“It’s just a great way for them to go out in the community and learn about it,” first grade teacher Lauren Valle said. “It was so nice to see the business owners here. I think that it made them feel really special. They’re so important to the community, as you know Southampton is such a special place.”

Totally adorable ! Love this project for kids in school. Teaches them about where they are from as well as being fun for everyone. Great idea
