Montauk Battery Project Gets Final Approval, Over Objections

Mar 20, 2018 1:06 PM

The East Hampton Town Planning Board last week approved an application for an energy storage facility off Industrial Road in Montauk.

The approval had been expected, as was the fact that it came via a split vote, with only the minimum four-member majority voting to approve the project, and three members voting against it.

Those who voted to approve the project—Randall Parsons, Nancy Keeshan, Ian Calder-Piedmont and Ed Krug—said last week that they saw the project as complying with the town’s requirements for a special permit in an industrial zone.

Those opposed—Job Potter, Kathy Cunningham and Patti Leber—echoed the concerns of many about the precarious placement of such a facility in an area bounded on both sides by water.

The Montauk Energy Storage LLC proposal calls for the 4,100-square-foot building to be built on a small corner of land adjacent to the parcel where PSEG Long Island plans to erect its new Montauk substation later this year. The energy storage facility will use large batteries to store up to 6 megawatts of power, for on-demand use at peak times.

Opponents of the project said that PSEG should be forced to relocate the planned new substation to higher ground to protect critical infrastructure from rising sea levels and flooding during severe storms.

The Town Zoning Board of Appeals has also given the Montauk Energy Storage project the necessary variances.

Is there a single thing Kathleen Cunningham doesn't object to? I've seen a lot of NIMBYism out here but she really takes it to a whole new level.
