Pollster: Every Indicator Points To Zeldin Victory In Congressional Race

Anna Throne-Holst and Lee Zeldin
Nov 4, 2016 9:48 AM

A new poll of 1st Congressional District voters indicates that U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin has opened a wide lead over Democratic challenger Anna Throne-Holst in the race for the East End's seat in the House of Representatives.

The poll, the second one conducted by Siena College and Newsday on the 1st CD race, shows Mr. Zeldin with a 21-percentage point lead over Ms. Throne-Holst when the poll was conducted between October 27 and 31. In late September Mr. Zeldin had been projected to have an approximately 15-percentage-point lead in the race.

The poll showed that Ms. Throne-Holst continues to struggle with name recognition and familiarity among a large chunk of the more than 600 people surveyed in the poll, despite hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on television advertising by her campaign in the last several weeks. She also seems to be struggling to win support from Democratic voters, with 22 percent of those registered Democrats polled responding that they planned to vote for Mr. Zeldin.

Democratic party staff had said this week that their own privately contracted polling had shown the race tightening in the weeks after controversial recordings of Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump were made public, which has been seen nationwide as a drag on other Republican candidates on the ballot. Not so in New York's 1st CD, say the Siena college pollsters.

“Heading into the closing days of the campaign, Zeldin is in a commanding position and Throne-Holst is facing

an ever-steepening uphill climb," Siena pollster Steven Greenberg said in a statement sent out by the college with the poll results. "Zeldin has a strong favorability rating while Throne-Holst is viewed unfavorably by a plurality of voters...More voters have been touched by the Zeldin campaign than by Throne-Holst’s. A large plurality of voters thinks Throne-Holst, not Zeldin, is waging the more negative campaign. And by a 15-point margin, voters want Republicans to maintain control of the House.

"Every indicator points to Zeldin," Greenberg added.

The new Siena poll also shows Mr. Trump widening his lead among 1st CD voters over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the presidential race, from 3 percentage points in late September to 13 points with barely more than a week to go before the election.

Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, however, still boasts a commanding lead over his Republican challenger, Wendy Long, in the district.

So The Dems that fed you the phony poll about Anna gaining name recognition and votes played you for a fool, eh?

And as if they were making a campaign donation-in-kind, 27east simply wrote what the Dems told them do, without checking, without questioning, without verifying. They did manage to fit in a swipe about the accusations made against Trump, but didn't find anything negative about Clinton newsworthy enough to mention, lol.

Callling HHH - calling HHH! How would you like your words, sauteed or (more fittingly in your case) steamed?

The TV campaigns have been interesting to follow. The one with Zeldin's wife is very good, while the ones AT-H are much better than the ones run on her behalf by the DNC -- they were not just awful, but completely inappropriate for a local gal.

I think she's doomed her own candidacy with these DNC ads, and trying to create inaccurate an portrait of Zeldin, a candidate The ...more

If Anna's people are telling the truth, based on the mailers clogging my box, on November 9th Zeldin will (in no particular order):

Deny women the right to see a doctor because he's a misogynist and wants them to die.

Supply guns to terrorists, because Anna knows how much our veterans side with terrorists.

Eliminate Social Security & Medicare (and send the money to the Koch Brothers - literally, this is an accusation she made).

I have not seen a single negative ...more

That's simply not true. I would site his work on getting HR 1887 passed, the Plum Island bill, as significant, as an example.

He has held constituent clinics an order of magnitude more often than his predecessor Bishop did, and from what I've been able to glean, has been very effective at helping locals resolve issues through his interventions.

The fact is, there's nothing Zeldin could ever do to gain your support, short of becoming a democrat.

What is that sweet rain falling upon me?

Oh, those are progressive tears of anguish and futility.

20 points ahead isn't sufficient, let's go for a historic blowout Lee Zeldin!

Poor High Hat. Anna says it, he believes it. Many of the absentees reported by Anna concerning Zeldin were because he was at another House committee meeting scheduled at the same time. Truth is he worked his ass off and we, his constituency, realize and appreciate his commitment. If Anna gets in she'll be absent too--whenever Mike Bloomberg summons her.

This is a travesty thanks to the Southampton Democratic Executive Committee who have rammed this non-Democrat down the the throats of Democratic elected officials, Committee and Party members this election cycle as they have for 8 years against stiff Dem opposition due to Anna's anti-Democratic positions.

We evidently have different opinions about the meaning of the word, "significant". In terms of the problems that the East End faces, I would use it to describe sewerage pollution and oceanfront erosion, both of which will require container loads of $$ to ameliorate. Conserving Plum Island would be terrific, but it doesn't approach these concerns in magnitude, and it doesn't require The Honorable Lee to ask the feds for MONEY (an initiative to which he is opposed.) Thank god that election day is finally here!

The day on which the malignancy that Trump represents will be conclusively prohibited from infecting our political institutions and on which the useless Zeldin will be returned to the private sector forever.

Forecast for the USA: Sunny weather ahead.
