A house fire on Chester Avenue in Bridgehampton on Thursday morning, March 14, closed the road for nearly two hours as five departments battled the blaze.

The call came in at approximately 10:05 a.m., according to Southampton Town Police Lieutenant Susan Ralph.

Bridgehampton Fire Chief Charles Broadmeadow said that the fire started in the attic of the house on Chester Avenue and spread, damaging several walls.

He added that the Southampton Town fire marshal was continuing to investigate the cause of the blaze, but an initial investigation pointed to an electrical issue.

The year-round residence was unoccupied at the time of the fire, according to Chief Broadmeadow, who said that the fire was quickly extinguished. Chester Avenue reopened at approximately 11:45 a.m., he said.

The Sag Harbor, Southampton, North Sea and East Hampton fire departments assisted at the scene.
